The residence didn't start with a website. It started with drives, walks, conversations with property owners, and a lot of notes.
These are the site visit notes, lightly edited. Published here because the search is part of the project — and because if you're going to spend six weeks somewhere, you deserve to know how seriously the somewhere was chosen.
Silver-mining town two hours south-west of Oslo. The industrial valley has a specific quality of light in late afternoon — oblique, almost theatrical. Good bones: a river, a cathedral, a hotel no one seems to stay in. Too close to Oslo for the kind of remove we're after. The surrounding countryside is promising; the town itself is not the point.
Finnish-Norwegian forest borderland. Flat, dense, disorienting in the best way. The forest manages to feel genuinely large — not scenic, not picturesque, just continuous. We looked at three properties. One had the right structure but needed a winter's worth of work. The distance from anything is real; that's both the appeal and the logistics problem. On the shortlist.
Industrial valley town, Telemark. Shadowed by mountains most of the winter; the sun mirrors on the hillside are famous for a reason. Dramatic topography, good architecture from the hydroelectric era. The valley can feel like a throat — extraordinary, but narrow. We're drawn to it for its seriousness. Returning in autumn to look at a specific property outside town.
Archipelago at the mouth of the Oslofjord. Low granite islands, cold water, maritime light. Completely different register from the inland sites — open, horizontal, almost severe. Logistics are harder (boat-dependent for some islands). The quality of solitude is different here: the sea does the work that mountains do elsewhere. A strong candidate for a future group; possibly not the right first one.
Long valley running north from Kongsberg. Less visited than Hallingdal, which is probably the point. Several old farmsteads with intact outbuildings. One property in particular — a main house, a separate studio barn, shared grounds — matches the capacity and material requirements almost exactly. Under serious consideration.
Drove the plateau perimeter. Not the plateau itself — too exposed, too infrastructure-light — but the villages and farms at its edge have a quality that's hard to describe: settled into the landscape rather than imposed on it. Several lead threads to follow up. The scale of the plateau changes how you think about scale generally; even a week at its edge recalibrates something.
